Hope you all are having a super fun, super spooky Halloween weekend! Nevada Day is October 31st, which means we always have state and school holidays for Halloween and this year that means a four day weekend! Woot!
This week I have been focused on finishing up my kids’ Halloween costumes, so I’m sorry I haven’t had a lot of new stuff up this week. But the good news is I have some great posts coming up in the next few weeks. Exciting stuff!
Do you guys want to see pictures of the kids’ costumes this year? They let me get away with a theme! SO exciting for me.
Here they are! My youngest got to reuse the Jack Skellington costume we made a few years ago, but I had to make a new bowtie because I couldn’t find the original one. This time I used craft foam for the wings which worked great and was way easier than the fabric and wire solution I used the last time.
My little girl wanted to be Sally, and her dress was one of my favorite pieces I made. I just sewed a simple dress and glued on different colored fabrics and painted designs and stitches on the whole thing. I also made her wig following Made’s awesome yarn wig tutorial.
And my favorite costume is my oldest son’s who was the Mayor of Halloweentown. If you don’t know the character, the mayor has a two-sided head that flips back and forth. I wasn’t sure how we were going to recreate that without covering his entire head (which I knew he would hate). Our solution was a simple two-sided hand held mask that I painted.
I love it! Anyway – hope you all have a Happy, Sweet, and Safe Halloween!

I love those costumes! As I was scrolling I was thinking darn I hope she thought to put the mayors other face on the other side of that mask, and you totally did! AWESOME!

I love this post! I’m planning a halloween birthday party for my son and daughter and the theme is Nightmare Before Christmas. I’m super excited to try my hand at costume making for my kiddos, but I’m extremely new to sewing. Could you explain in more detail how you made your daughter’s Sally costume? Any tips would be helpful! I love her leggings too, were those made by you as well?

Hi Anna! Thank you! I really loved their costumes last year! For the sally dress, I basically took a dress of hers that fit her well (actually a bit loosely because the sally dress didn’t have any stretch to it because I just used plain cotton plus it is always much easier to make a dress smaller than larger!) and used the dress as a kind of pattern. Cut the pieces out based on that dress leaving extra room on the sides for your seams. Then I sewed it together, flipped it right side out and glued on pieces of different colored fabric using fabric glue. Then painted circles, stripes, stitches, etc. on to the dress using fabric paint and a small round brush. If you don’t feel comfortable sewing the dress from scratch, maybe try to find a plain dress that fits well and just glue on fabric scraps? That would make it a little easier. And, yes, I made the tights. I bought plain blue tights and then just drew on the stitches with a sharpie. I had my daughter put the tights on before I drew to make sure the stitches were in the right places (but she did get a little marker on her legs so be careful with that!) Hope that helps! Good luck!
